Your Wedding: How Much Cake Do You Really Need? - TMF Cake Designs

When planning your wedding, one of the most exciting parts is choosing the perfect wedding cake. But how much cake do you really need to ensure every guest gets a delicious slice without over ordering or wasting? At TMF Cake Designs, we’ve got you covered with tips to help you calculate just the right amount of cake for your big day!

1. Consider Your Guest Count

The first step in deciding how much wedding cake you need is knowing your guest list. A general rule of thumb is to plan for one slice per guest. If you have 100 guests, you’ll need at least 100 servings of cake. However, if you're having additional desserts, a smaller cake may suffice.

2. Types of Cake Servings

Not all slices are created equal! Wedding cakes typically come in two types of servings:

  • Traditional Cake Slice (1” x 2”): A standard size served at most weddings.
  • Dessert Cake Slice (1.5” x 2”): A slightly larger slice for weddings that offer cake as the primary dessert.

3. Tier Sizes and Serving Counts

At TMF Cake Designs, we offer various cake sizes to suit your needs. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • 3-tier cake (6", 8", 10"): Serves approximately 75-100 guests.
  • 4-tier cake (6", 8", 10", 12"): Serves approximately 150 guests.
  • 5-tier cake (6", 8", 10", 12", 14"): Serves 200+ guests.

The number of tiers depends on your guest count and how much visual impact you want the cake to have at your wedding. A smaller guest list doesn’t mean a less impressive cake — I can still create intricate designs with fewer tiers!

4. Cake Flavours and Filling Choices

Don’t forget to factor in variety! Offering multiple flavours allows your guests to enjoy different tastes, but it may increase the amount of cake you’ll need. Popular combinations at TMF Cake Designs include chocolate and raspberry, vanilla with fresh berries, and our signature lemon cake with zesty curd. You can purchase a Cake Tasting Box on my website, with 6 mouthwatering combinations to try! The cost of this is deductible from your wedding cake order if you decide that I am the cake designer for you!

5. To-Go Cake Boxes

Many couples love the idea of offering cake as a takeaway treat. If you're planning to provide to-go cake boxes, consider ordering extra servings to ensure everyone gets a slice to enjoy at home.

6. Saving the Top Tier

Traditionally, couples save the top tier of their wedding cake to enjoy on their first anniversary. If this is something you’re planning to do, you’ll need to account for it when calculating your servings.

7. Consult With Your Cake Designer
